The Tuesday tree: the promise of green

March 8, 2011

Now here’s a sight which made me very happy when I spotted it three days ago. I positively skipped over to investigate. While the ash trees, always amongst the very last trees to come into leaf in late spring, are still tipped with sooty black,

the horse chestnuts, always amongst the first to leaf, are already covered with fat green buds.

Today is a day of typical March bluster: fistfuls of rain thrown on a raw wind, with a smell of sleet on the air. But oh, here in these buds is the promise of Spring!

There is a little more about horse chestnuts at Can we pretend it’s Tuesday already?
