For those of us with young children on holiday, the weather is behaving perfectly. Several inches of fresh, powdery snow yesterday, with more falling overnight and today: a perfect winter solstice. I abandoned my plans to make brandy butter and took children and dogs into the garden to go sledging.
I love the winter solstice: the feeling of the earth pausing on its axis, holding its breath for a moment of stillness before the seasons start to turn again. The song which best sums up this feeling for me is ‘Snow‘ from the album “A Winter Garden’, by the magical Loreena McKennit. Another fine song for the day, a haunting hymn for the solstice, is ‘Sol Invictus‘ from ‘Strange Communion’ by Thea Gilmore. Wishing you snowy landscapes and warm homes.
