word(s) for the day: cellar door

September 9, 2009

‘cellar door’.  According to Professor Tolkien, these are the most beautiful words in the English language. Forget about their meaning, just listen to the sounds.  Can anyone improve on that? ‘Mellifluous’ is a luscious word, I think, but there must be plenty of other beauties.

Thank you – and what a lovely word you have chosen! It makes me think of Shakespeare’s fairies.
